Calling all California girl-serving organizations! The California Girls in STEM Collaborative is hosting a virtual event on April 23rd to foster collaboration amongst girl-serving organizations and to promote equity in STEM. We will hear from some key funders about what they see as key lessons and trends for the future of STEM education. The event will provide a chance for organizations to connect and share ideas, resources, and challenges as we re-emerge from the pandemic.

This will be the first event in a series in 2021. Future virtual summits will highlight evaluation techniques and equitable and inclusionary practices in “Making,” invention, and engineering.

Janet Coffey HeadshotJanet Coffey is the Program Director at the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. She has spent her professional career in science education, with longstanding interest in science learning and public engagement in science. Janet’s work at the Moore Foundation spans both the science and San Francisco Bay Area programs. She leads the foundation’s Curiosity-Driven Science Initiative, a multi-year effort that seeks to engage youth and community members in meaningful science experiences to strengthen interest in, appreciation for, and understanding of science. She also oversees the informal science education portfolio in the San Francisco Bay Area Program. Before joining the foundation, Janet was on the faculty at the University of Maryland, College Park. Her research sat at the intersection of learning and assessment, and spanned study of younger children to college student including in- and out-of-school contexts. She began her career in education at the National Academy of Sciences’ National Research Council before teaching and coaching middle school in Washington, D.C. Janet received her undergraduate degree in human biology from Stanford University, where she also earned a doctorate in science education.

Julie Johnson HeadshotJulie Johnson is a Program Director in the Division on Research and Learning at the National Science Foundation where she has worked since 2013. She works with the Advancing Informal STEM Learning (AISL), Innovative Technology Experiences for Students and Teachers (ITEST) and the Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) programs. Prior to coming to NSF, Johnson was a middle school science and math teacher, worked in museum education, and was the chief operating officer of an aquarium. She is experienced in performance assessment, creating organizational systems, program development, evaluation, group facilitation, and effective communication with diverse external stakeholders. Johnson has B.S., M.S., and M.A. degrees in biology, instructional technology, and deaf education; she received her doctorate in Leadership and Change from Antioch University. Her current research interests focus on organizations with STEM-engagement as a major focus and include leader/leadership development, the intersections of organizational learning and leader development in place, and leadership in complex systems.

Gemma Lenowitz HeadshotGemma Lenowitz is a Program Officer at Overdeck Family Foundation. She sources and supports organizations for the Inspired Minds portfolio to build access to high-quality out-of-school STEM experiences that help all children achieve their full potential. Previously, she served as a STEM coordinator and 12th grade lead at MESA Charter High School, where she founded and coached a robotics team, taught Bioengineering and Computer Science, and implemented edtech and project-based learning. In 2016, Gemma received an Allen Distinguished Educator award for innovative teaching in bioengineering, and incorporated neuroscience into her classroom through the Brain Insight Teacher Scholar program at Columbia University. As a 2013 Teach for America corps member, she earned an MAT from Fordham University after graduating magna cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania with a B.A. in Cognitive Science. Gemma is a member of the STEM Funders Network and Grantmakers for Thriving Youth.
