Maine Girls Collaborative Lead in Maine
Women's Hall of Fame
The Twentieth Annual Maine Women's Hall of Fame
Induction Ceremony and Gala Celebration was held
on March 21, 2009 at the University of Maine in Augusta. The
Maine Women's Hall of Fame was established in
1990 by the Maine Federation of Business and
Professional Women. The Hall of Fame recognizes
women who make a significant impact in improving
the lives of women in Maine. This year's ceremony
honored Sharon E. Barker, the Director
of the Women's Resource Center at the University of
Maine and the lead for the Maine Girls
Collaborative.

Great Lakes Girls Collaborative Project -
Michigan: Hands-on Math and Science
Workshop On August 14-15, the Great
Lakes Girls Collaborative Project - Michigan
hosted a hands-on math and science workshop at the
Robert H. Lurie Engineering Center on the University
of Michigan's Ann Arbor campus. This workshop was
funded by the University of Michigan Diversity Council,
in collaboration with the Programs for Educational
Opportunity at the University of Michigan School of
Education and the Women in Science and
Engineering Program at the University of Michigan
School of Engineering. A group of 30 enthusiastic participants
from K-12 schools, after school programs, post secondary
institutions, and nonprofits including AAUW, Big
Brothers Big Sisters, Girl Scouts, Communities in
Schools, Blandford Nature Center, SEEDS Youth
Corps and WINGS spent two days learning hands-on activities,
networking, and planning ways in which they
might collaborate in the future.
Regional Collaboratives Fund Over 60 Mini-Grants
in 2009
Since the start of 2009, twelve
Regional Collaboratives have funded over 60 mini-
grant projects across the country. In total, over 100
grants have been funded by NGCP Regional
Collaboratives, serving over 7,000 girls nationwide.
NGCP mini-grants are designed to enhance access
to and build collaboration between programs and
resources. Funded mini-grant projects can be viewed
at http://www.ngcproject.org/mini-grant/grants.cfm. Regional Collaboratives will
continue to offer mini-grant funding to programs
through 2010.

The Mid-Atlantic
Girls Collaborative (MAGiC) Kick-Off
Conference is designed to bring together
individuals
and organizations that serve girls in formal and
informal STEM education. Attendees will learn
about resources to support STEM educational
activities and how to
gain funding to create STEM partnerships. The
keynote
speaker will be Catherine
Didion, Senior Program Officer at the National Academy of
Engineering.

Michigan Lower Peninsula Kick-Off, Flint,
MI

The Upper and Lower Peninsula Kick-Off
Conferences, hosted by the Great
Lakes Girls Collaborative, will offer the
chance for schools and organizations
committed to motivating girls
to pursue careers in STEM to come
together, share best practices, network, and to develop new
collaborations. Along with an introduction to the Great Lakes
Girls Collaborative, participants will learn how to apply for a mini-grant.

Lights On Afterschool, Nationwide

Lights On Afterschool is celebrated nationwide to call
attention to the importance of afterschool programs for
children, families, and communities. More than 7,500
communities and one million Americans celebrate
Lights On Afterschool every year. Lights On
Afterschool is a project of the Afterschool
Alliance, a
nonprofit organization dedicated to ensuring that all
children have access to quality, affordable afterschool
programs.

SWE Event at University of Alabama,

The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) sponsors a
national road trip to get girls involved in engineering.
In the second of three events, the SWE section in
Huntsville will host a one day event for girls

WAMC's Women in Science
Programming
WAMC Northeast Public Radio, the public radio station
that brought you the Gracie Award-winning series The Sounds of Progress, has

disabilities working and learning in science fields and
the programs and practices that have helped them
achieve success.

"Engineers of America" is the theme for the
Engineering Education Service Center's 2009 poster
contest. Posters should be fun, motivational and
inspire students to pursue a degree in engineering,

Informal Science Assessment Web site Needs
Your Feedback This searchable Web site
developed by PEAR (Program in Education,
Afterschool and Resiliency), with the support of the
Noyce Foundation, provides assessment tools for
informal science learning. The goal is to provide
practitioners, evaluators, researchers, and policy
makers with the information to choose appropriate
tools for assessing program quality and outcomes for
children and youth. The Web site offers users the
opportunity to post ratings for each assessment tool.

Association of University
Women (AAUW) members across the
country are serving as
Regional Liaisons for the National
Girls
Collaborative Project. These
Regional
Liaisons help the people involved
in the NGCP
to make connections - to one
another, to
resources on gender equity, and to
AAUW.
AWE is the Assessing Women and Men
in
Engineering
Project, which provides exportable
assessment
instruments, literature resources,
and methodologies
for Women in Engineering and
similar programs. AWE is developing
resources for
use by K-12 STEM programs as part of
NGCP
services.
