NGCP October Webcast
Creating Collaborations with NGCP
Mini-Grants

In this interactive webcast you'll learn how
to create collaborations using NGCP
mini-grant funding. NGCP mini-grants
are designed
to support collaboration, assessment
activities, and projects related to sharing
promising practices. Past mini-grant
recipients will share inspiring stories and
outline strategies for successful partnership
and program development. Since 2002, NGCP
has
awarded
over 100 mini-grants to organizations in
California, Kansas, Massachusetts, Michigan,
Missouri, Oregon, Texas, Washington, North
Carolina, Florida, Kentucky, and Wisconsin
that support
girl-serving STEM
programs.

NGCP Welcomes New Northeast Girls
Collaborative: Massachusetts, New Hampshire,
Rhode Island, and Vermont
On Friday, October 26, members of the newly
formed leadership team of the Northeast Girls
Collaborative Project attended an on-site
Collaboration Institute facilitated by Brenda
Britsch, Patricia MacGowan, and Karen
Peterson from the NGCP National Leadership
Team. The full-day event was hosted by The Joan
and James Leitzel Center for Mathematics,
Science, and Engineering Education at the
University of New Hampshire. Planning is
already underway for a kick-off conference on
Saturday, November 8 at the University of New
Hampshire at Manchester (see full description
below).

Girls Raised in Tennessee Science Kick-Off
Conference
The Girls
Raised in Tennessee Science (GRITS)
Collaborative Project Kick-Off Conference
was held on Friday, September 26, at Middle
Tennessee State University. The event was
attended by over seventy teachers,
administrators, STEM professionals,
and government representatives. The morning
began with a panel discussion of women STEM
professionals. Dr. Leslie Wisner-Lynch of
BioMimetics Therapeutics, Inc. delivered the
keynote address, using her own inspirational
story to impart to attendees the importance
of girls' STEM education.
Project Launch: New Look/Great Lakes Girls
Collaborative-Illinois/STEM Equity
Pipeline
On Thursday, October 2, more than sixty
individuals from community colleges, K-12
schools, community based organizations, and
career and technical education centers
participated in a unique collaborative event
in Springfield, Illinois: New
Look, STEM Equity
Pipeline, and Great
Lakes Girls Collaborative
Project-Illinois Launch
Workshop. These three initiatives share
common elements and provide a wealth of
research-based resources for special
populations, especially non-traditional
occupations and females in STEM. Participants
attended breakout sessions on Documenting
Performance Results, Goal Setting and
Alignment, and Collaborations and Sustainability.

2008 National Youth Science Day

New AWE Web Site Now Available
Visit the new Assessing Women and Men in
Engineering Web site at AWEonline.org.
The new page is designed to provide quicker
and easier access to the AWE assessment
tools, including STEM-focused survey
instruments, data entry tools, research
overviews, assessment capacity building tools,
and more. You can register for free or use
your existing ID and password. Send

SMILE Web Site Available with STEM
Resources
The NSF grant Science
and Math Informal Learning Educators
(SMILE) pathway has launched a new
Web site, HowToSmile.org.
SMILE is a group of
science museums dedicated to bringing STEM to
the wider world. SMILE is collecting the best
educational materials on the Web and creating
learning activities, tools, and services.
SMILE spotlights hands-on and interactive
activities, both physical and virtual.
Sounds of Progress Radio Series Available
Online
WAMC Northeast Public Radio's series, The
Sounds of Progress: The Changing Role of
Girls and Women in Science and
Engineering, is now available through
WAMC's Women in
Science Web site. Listen to
the series as streaming audio, download a
podcast, or request a free CD set. Supported
by NSF, the
series highlights the role of women, past and
present, in science and engineering education
and careers.
National Disability Employment Awareness
Month
October is National Disability Employment
Awareness
Month (NDEAM) and the Office of
Disability Employment Policy has produced
a 2008
NDEAM Poster. Other activities are
planned for October to increase the
public's awareness of the contributions and
skills of American workers with disabilities.

Learning Point Associates Appoints New
Member to Board of Directors
In August, the Learning
Point Associates Board of Directors
appointed Donna Gerardi Riordan, DGR Associates
and NGCP
Champions Board member, as the newest
director. Most recently, Gerardi Riordan was
the director of programs for the California Council
on Science and Technology (CCST) where
she worked to analyze and develop policy
recommendations to improve K-12 science and
mathematics education. Learning Point
Associates is a nonprofit education research
and consulting organization that helps
clients achieve breakthroughs that improve
teaching and learning.

Association of University
Women
(AAUW) members across the
country are serving as
Regional Liaisons for the National
Girls
Collaborative Project. These
Regional
Liaisons help the people involved
in the NGCP
to make connections - to one
another, to
resources on gender equity, and to
AAUW.
AWE
is the Assessing Women and Men
in
Engineering
Project, which provides exportable
assessment
instruments, literature resources,
and methodologies
for Women in Engineering and
similar programs. AWE is developing
resources for
use by K-12 STEM programs as part of
NGCP
services.
