Science Club

Science Club, a partnership between Northwestern University and the Boys & Girls Club of Chicago, has been awarded the 2013 Afterschool STEM Impact Award for strong partnerships. Science Club connects Northwestern University scientist mentors with middle school students through hands-on, inquiry-based science projects. The program benefits both groups, positively impacting students’ STEM skills and mentors’ teaching and science communication skills.

The Afterschool STEM Impact Awards, provided by the Afterschool Alliance and the Noyce Foundation, recognize STEM programs that are clearly demonstrating their impact on participants and highlight the power of afterschool programs as key partners in STEM education reform. In addition to $10,000, selected programs receive multiple opportunities to collaborate with and be highlighted by the Afterschool Alliance.

GirlStart Summer Camp

GirlStart Summer Camp, in Austin TX, was recently selected as one of four exemplary STEM learning programs that were deemed ready to scale nationwide by Change the Equation. A week-long STEM experience for girls in the 3rd through 10th grades, GirlStart Summer Camp increases girls’ mastery in STEM subjects by introducing them to fun, real-world STEM activities. Girls who participate become much more interested in STEM and confident in their own ability to pursue STEM.
