Shyla S.Hi! My name is Shyla. I joined the National Girls Collaborative Project’s Young Girls Advisory Board (YoGA board) at the beginning of this school year. At the time, I did not know what to expect, but a couple months after joining I realized that it was a perfect fit for me! All the girls are so nice, and it was amazing to meet new people who are all passionate about making a difference for women in STEM. We have meetings once a month that last for about forty-five minutes to an hour, and they are always engaging. Each meeting we focus on different ideas and suggestions that would help spread the word about women’s STEM initiatives that we believe in. For example, the YoGA Board is currently giving advice to a digital forensics focused computer game for girls. In the past year, we’ve also partnered with Amazon Studio’s Troop Zero, Dino Dana The Movie, and Reinvented Magazine.

The atmosphere of this group is truly an amazing thing to be a part of, and the dedication that my fellow members have for our mission is both incredible and inspiring. However, the part I really loved about joining this board was the drive to highlight important, underserved programs for women in STEM. Often, many local women’s STEM programs seem to go unnoticed and not talked about. But at the YoGA Board, our mission is to connect and lift up women’s STEM programs from all around the world. This is evidenced by the geographic makeup of our board: all our board members are from such different areas, and it’s truly fascinating to watch everyone come together to continue to grow as a team.

You can find out more about the YoGA Board on our Instagram page (@Girls.Collaborative). Be sure to follow us there! Also, if you or someone you know is interested in joining the YoGA Board, please email our board chair, Olivia Pavco-Giaccia, for more information:
