July is Park and Recreation Month and the National Park and Recreation Association is encouraging communities across the country to share what they love about parks and recreation. What does NGCP love about parks and recreation? NGCP loves the many science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) programs, curricula, and resources for girls offered by Departments of Park and Recreation from around the country.

The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission’s Department of Parks and Recreation offers a free 6-week STEM program for girls to encourage them to pursue careers in STEM fields.

In Ohio, the Elyria Parks and Recreation Department and its partner organizations offer summer camps like YTeen Smart Girls, Environmental Science, Science & Nature Camp, and NASA STEM “On the Moon”.

In addition, the California Department of Parks and Recreation website features an array of resources and curricula for educators and the department provides assistance for class visits to state parks.

These programs, curricula, and resources give girls opportunities to participate in hands-on activities and get excited about STEM subjects and careers.
