Girls Without Limits!

Girls Without Limits! (GWOL!)  is a low-cost program administered by the YWCA of Olympia, Washington. GWOL! is offered to girls ages 10-14 to develop STEM skills, gain career awareness through mentoring, and foster self-esteem and leadership skills in a positive and fun environment.

Last week, EdLab Group staff Nimisha Ghosh Roy and Amy Hirotaka were accompanied by FabFems role model Katie Doran for a panel discussion at one of GWOL!’s summer camps. The girls prepared excellent, thoughtful questions about barriers to STEM education for girls. Some of the questions included:

  • When did you know you wanted to go into STEM?
  • What job would you want to have if you didn’t have this one?
  • What are the biggest issues preventing women from getting STEM jobs?
  • Did you go to college? Where? Did you like college?
  • Who is your STEM role model?

After the panel discussion, Nimisha, Amy and Katie had the chance to speak with girls one-on-one, making personal connections. Katie, who works at Microsoft, helped girls get excited about computer science, encouraging them to take available classes at their high schools.

The GWOL! girls will be writing, editing, filming, and producing a video project about a women’s issue of their choice. The girls who participated in this panel will be creating a video about barriers to STEM education for girls.
