NGCP January Webcast
Why Don't They Hear What I Say?
Wednesday, January 9, 2008
11:00-12:00 PST
Have you ever felt as though you're shouting and no
one hears; that your good work on gender and
science is ignored by policy makers, teachers, and
parents who all too often fall back on myths and
stereotypes about gender?
If your answer is yes, then join Pat Campbell and the
FairerScience team to learn more about why you
aren't being heard and what you can do to help people
separate myth from reality. We will cover issues of
language, of media reporting and just what the facts
actually are. In addition, we will explore the women in
science blogging community and ways blogs can be
used to introduce girls to the real lives of real
scientists.

National Mentoring Month
In honor of National Mentoring Month, we
looked to the
NGCP Program Directory to find some examples
of
mentoring at work within the NGCP. We found many
examples of great local, regional, and
national programs that incorporate mentoring into
their work with girls in STEM. Here are two
examples:
Alliance of Technology and
Women
Alliance of Technology and Women is a career
life
cycle organization. Whether you already are a
successful woman in technology or you are thinking
you might want to be one, ATW offers valuable
mentoring programs. Through the
ATW Mentor Program, applicants are matched with
executive-level mentors for individually prescribed
mentor/mentee relationships.

California and Florida NGCP Mini-Grants Open
The National Girls Collaborative Project offers many
tools to help strengthen the capacity of programs
serving girls in science, technology, engineering and
mathematics (STEM). NGCP awards mini-grants to
girl-serving STEM focused programs. Mini-grant
projects must relate to either informal learning or
evaluation and assessment. Resources about NGCP
mini-grants are available on the Web site. Currently,
collaboratives in California and Florida
are offering mini-grants in their regions. To view the
deadlines:

Reaching Out to Underserved Populations in
STEM
February 13, 2008
11:00-12:00 PST
You've spent weeks planning and developing a
program to encourage girls or other underserved
populations in STEM. You carefully connected with
groups who may serve those populations. Still, when
the registration comes in, you notice very few
participants are from those targeted groups. In this
session, learn from experts in the field what research
and practice tell us about developing and marketing
STEM programs for underserved populations in
STEM.
